What makes the milk organic?
Wholesome, delicious, and nutritious Organic Valley organic milk is produced by cooperative family farmers working in harmony with nature.
The USDA organic standards are the strictest food production standards in the world.
Certified organic farms are required to follow the strict production rules of the USDA's National Organic Standards (www.ams.usda.gov/nop), and are regularly inspected by an independent third party for compliance.
Organic Valley farmers never use antibiotics, synthetic hormones, or synthetic pesticides in production.
During their entire lives the cows receive only 100% certified organic feed.
Organic cows are primarily fed on certified organic pasture during the grazing season, which provides better quality of life for the animal, superior animal health, and greater nutritive value in food derived from the animal.
Certified feed and pasture are grown on land not treated with synthetic fertilizers or pesticides for a minimum of three years.
Organic animals and feeds must not be genetically modified organisms or contain products from genetically modified sources.
Every truckload of milk is tested for antibiotics, temperature, and bacteria, and all organic milk processing plants are inspected to verify organic product is never mixed with conventional product, non-approved ingredients, or cleaning materials.
What are the health benefits of drinking Organic Valley shelf-stable 8 oz. low fat milks?

Why doesn't the milk require refrigeration?
Our shelf-stable 8 oz. low fat milk is ultra pasteurized and aseptically packed, giving it a shelf life of 6 months prior to opening.
This longer shelf life results from the extra care given to milk in the aseptic packaging process—from sterilization of the processing equipment and environment, to preparing the carton for filling, to the process of ultra pasteurization itself which heat treats milk to eliminate potentially harmful bacteria. Most consumers have used aseptically packaged products before in the form of the aseptic juice box. The aseptic packaging process is based on ensuring that both food and packaging materials are free of potentially harmful bacteria at the moment the food is packaged.
What is aseptic packaging?
Aseptic is a revolutionary process of packaging which allows preservation of perishable liquid foods, keeping them safe and fresh for up to six months without refrigeration or preservatives.
Box-shaped aseptic packages contain six layers in a laminate of three materials: 70% high-quality paperboard; 24% polyethylene; and 6% aluminum. Paper provides stiffness, strength, and the efficient brick shape to the package. Polyethylene in the innermost layer forms the seals that make the package liquid-tight and provides a protective coating on the exterior to keep the package dry. An ultra-thin aluminum layer forms a barrier against light and oxygen, eliminating need for refrigeration, and preventing spoilage without use of preservatives or irradiation.
What happens during the aseptic packaging process?
During the aseptic packaging process, milk is flash pasteurized, then filled into sterilized packaging and sealed. Specifically, roll-fed packaging is sterilized and shaped into a tube. The tube is filled with product and sealed below the surface of the liquid, ensuring there is no air space in the package. Sterilization of the packaging material is achieved by way of a hydrogen peroxide rinse, and any residue is removed with heat. This leaves the packaging material completely dry and creates a sterile atmosphere in the filling section. The flash-heating-and-cooling aseptic process reduces the energy use and nutrient loss found in conventional sterilization.
Is aseptic packaging environmentally friendly?
The ratio of product to packaging of this process is very resource efficient at 97% product and 3% packaging, and it uses 60% less plastic than other forms of packaging. This package is made mostly from paper which is, unlike plastic, a renewable resource. An aseptic packaging use less energy to manufacture, fill, ship and store than almost any other package, and was awarded the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development in 1996. The packaging is 100% recyclable, but few communities currently have programs in place to handle it.
Available flavors are Chocolate,Vanilla and Strawberry.
